Wolfowitz denies masterminding Iraq War
Berlin, 2008 Oct 23, IRIB
The weekly Die Zeit newspaper said in a report on Thursday that a leading American neo-conservative and former top Pentagon official rejected any responsibility for orchestrating the Iraq war in spring 2003.
According to the German-language translation of the interview, former US deputy secretary of defense Paul Wolfowitz claimed he was "not the mastermind" of the US Iraq invasion.
He added "The decision was made by former US secretary of defense Donald Rumsfeld. We had no real influence, although I wish we would have. Recommendations were ignored."
Wolfowitz and several other top US neoconservatives, among them Richard Perle, Douglas Feith and Dick Cheney, had pressed for the Iraq war, falsely accusing the Arab country of stockpiling weapons of mass destruction.
Tens of thousands of people died and were injured in the Iraq war while millions were left homeless and displaced. (Ebrahimi)
