Police in the US state of Iowa have arrested several Occupy protesters who refused to leave the Capitol grounds in Des Moines after its closing time.
Around 10 protesters were arrested on Sunday night for refusing to leave the grounds after being warned that they were violating the 11 pm closing time. The closing time is enforced by state troopers.
On Sunday afternoon, around 70 occupiers at the Stewart Square Park picked up their tents and signs and marched back to the Capitol space, which demonstrators call it "People's Park."
The protesters had been given a city deadline of Tuesday to leave Stewart Square Park.
The Iowa State Capitol is located in Iowa's capital city, Des Moines, and houses the Iowa Senate, Iowa House of Representatives and the Office of the Governor.
On October 9, 30 Occupy protesters were arrested at the Capitol grounds after refusing to leave at closing time.
Meanwhile, New York City police arrested 12 Occupy protesters at a Sunday night march, which was organized in support of protesters in Oakland, California, where a Saturday night Occupy demonstration ended with police firing smoke and tear gas and arresting at least 500 people.
The protest campaign owes its inspiration to the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement, which began when a group of demonstrators gathered in New York's financial district on September 17 to protest the excessive influence of big corporations on the US policies as well as the unjust distribution of wealth in the country among other things.
According to occupyarrests.com, with the exception of the latest arrests, at least 6,319 Occupy protesters have been apprehended since the emergence of the movement.
