US urges European accomplices for more troops in occupied Afghanistan
By Ebrahimi Tehran, 2008 Oct 13, IRIB
The commander for NATO forces in Afghanistan, US General David McKiernan, in his press conference, urged European accomplices in the American occupation of Afghanistan, for more troops in that hapless country, stressing that it is needed urgently.
At a time when Washington's accomplices are pressing for the least number of their military forces in Afghanistan, General McKiernan said that the additional military capability is needed because of what he claimed an increased number of fighters coming into Afghanistan from Pakistan's tribal regions.
He also tried to deny that the US has failed in Afghanistan as admitted by some NATO officials.
So far tens of thousands of innocent people have been killed in Afghanistan by the occupier on the pretext of being Taliban, with whose ringleaders the US and its West European accomplices are having clandestine meetings.
However, the opposition towards the high-handed policies of the US and its accomplices is on the rise, while at the same time the NATO is openly admitting that there is no military solution to the problem in Afghanistan. The reconstruction, which the US and its European accomplices had pretended has never happened in Afghanistan despite over seven years of occupation. The country is in the grip of economic problems.
In view of these facts, the NATO is reluctant to answer the US call for more troops. In fact they are becoming more concerned about the fate of their soldiers especially at a time when attacks are on the rise.
As admitted by the European leaders, there is growing opposition by their populations to the undesirable American war in Afghanistan where billions of Euros have been squandered in vain.
Though certain western regimes have talked of a compromise with the Taliban, they know well that this is not a remedy for their swollen wounds and as a matter of fact that would not justify their unwanted military presence there. They also understand that such a dubious deal will only intensify the opposition of people throughout Afghanistan. In view of this NATO is not willing to shoulder the burden the US is trying to impose on it.
