The US military is in a crisis once again following the resignation of Chief of US Central Command, Admiral William Fallon because of the irrational policies of the most unpopular ever administration in the White House. If the western media is to be believed Fallon's decision to resign was because of differences between him and warmongering president, George W. Bush over Iran. The top US commander was reportedly opposed to any military confrontation with the Islamic Republic.
Most political observers believe that despite the likelihood of difference between Fallon and the White House over Iran, the decision is more influenced by the disastrous US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
They also point out that the resignation, which seems to be forced upon Fallon, may be part of scenario to try to influence the result of the parliamentary polls in Iran next Friday by giving the impression that US has kept its military options open and is ready to sack any general that calls for avoidance of military confrontation with the Islamic Republic.
Whatever the reasons for Fallon's exit after less than a year in command, it is crystal clear that US policy is nothing but self-defeatist. It is also clear that when Fallon has been made the scapegoat for the failure of the Pentagon to improve the security situation in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
In Afghanistan, differences are growing between Washington and its NATO accomplices. In Iraq, US military costs have skyrocketed, to the tune of US$12 billion dollars per month. In view of this fact, criticism of the US military has increased. It is also worth noting that Admiral William Fallon is not the first US top commander to resign. Earlier, General Peter Pace had resigned as head of Chiefs of Staff due to his failure in handling the disastrous Iraq war. Donald Rumsfeld, the then Pentagon chief, was also forced to resign because of the disastrous war in Iraq. Moreover, apart from the reasons of Fallon's resignation, what is important is that the gap between the US military and the civilians who run the Pentagon has widened beyond repair.
