Vienna, 2007 Sep 8, IRIB IAEA Chief Mohammed El-Baradei on September 7 likened the western critics of an agreement reached between the Agency and Iran's to drivers sitting in the back seat.
He criticized US media and political circles for discrediting him, implicitly calling on the US not to intervene in the IAEA affairs.
US circles have considered El-Baradei's recent constructive report on Iran- IAEA cooperation as insufficient. The intense US attack on the Agency chief shows US officials did not expect such a report and hoped El-Baradei would have presented an ambiguous and two-sided report against Iran. But the positive report has faced US efforts to advance its goals against Iran via the UN Security Council with problems.
In reaction to El-Baradei's strong reaction to US intervention, however, the US has implicitly retreated, terming the report valuable and speaking of US support for the Agency's efforts to solve Iran's nuclear case.
Meanwhile the US and the EU also have intense differences on how to deal with Iran's nuclear case and the majority of EU members call for solving the case at the IAEA.
In all, El-Baradei's reactions to US intervention in the affairs of international organizations like the agency that have faced this body with problems in carrying out its duties, were made to underline that the IAEA is the only qualified authority that can survey Iran's case and it can solve issues in a short time without need for the West's intervention. Something Iran has also repeatedly stressed.
