Are Europeans prepared to fulfill US interests in Afghanistan?
Tehran, 2007/06/15, IRIB
Following repeated failures of the U.S. forces in Afghanistan, U.S. officials have baselessly accused the Islamic Republic of Iran of arms support for Taleban forces.
Despite being equipped with most advanced weapons, U.S. and NATO forces have not managed to withstand Taleban sedition in Afghanistan and in numerous cases have targeted Afghan civilians instead of destroying Taleban positions and forces. In order to justify their ineffective policies and military operations in Afghanistan, Americans have made the outrageous and astonishing claim of Iran's arms support for Taleban. Meanwhile, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns claimed Wednesday that NATO forces have found a huge consignment of Iranian weapons, which were sent to Taleban. The U.S. Defense Secretary was cautious in his claim and said that the Iranian government cannot be uninformed about entry of this country's weapons to Afghanistan. But the U.S. Undersecretary of State claimed there are irrefutable evidences in regard to dispatch of Iranian weapons to Taleban. However, he surprisingly did not express one of his so-called evidences.
During the years of occupation of Afghanistan by former USSR army different types of weaponry were used by the clashing parties. After the establishment of Taleban by the U.S., Pakistan, and a number of regional Arab states, it was deployed in Afghanistan's battlefield. Numerous weapons exchanged hands in Afghanistan's war zones. Americans are completely aware of this fact because after the domination of Taleban on Afghanistan, several U.S. intelligence and arms agents went to Pakistan's Pishavar markets in search of Stinger Missile Launchers, which U.S. had handed over to a number of Afghan groups. Moreover, based on wisdom and logic, Americans should pay attention to this fact that how can Islamic Republic of Iran provide arms support for its enemy, Taleban, and submit weapons to them, which bear “Made in Iran” mark? These facts go to show the baseless nature of U.S. allegations in this regard.
Meanwhile, following Gates and Burns baseless claims on Wednesday, Afghan Defense Ministry Spokesman Zahir Azimi said Thursday that no Iran-made weapons have been found in the battlefields with Taleban.
The fact of the matter is that U.S. has made such baseless allegations on the verge of NATO Defense Ministers' imminent meeting. The U.S. intends to persuade European countries to send further equipment and reinforcements to Afghanistan.
The American statesmen think by making the baseless claim of Iran's interference in Afghanistan, they can make Europe come along with them. But past experiences show Europeans are not prepared to fulfill U.S. interests, at least in Afghanistan.
