1535 inmates pardoned or commuted in Iran
Tehran, 2007/04/05, IRIB Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayed Ali Khamenei approved an offer by Head of the Judiciary to pardon or commute the sentences of a number of prisoners.
The pardons were set to commemorate the auspicious birth anniversary of the noblest Messenger of Allah, Hazrat Muhammad (s.a.w.a.), and his descendant, the 6th Shii Imam, Jafar al-Sadegh (a.s.), both falling on Friday.
The inmates, some 1535 people, had received their sentences either in public courts or in revolutionary and military courts.
Head of the Judiciary, Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroudi's offer invokes the clause 11 of the article 111 of the Constitution.
Out of the pardoned, 122 were previously condemned to death.
