Larijani hails Journalist Day
Qom, 2008 Aug 6, IRNA/PressTV Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said here Wednesday that in today's world one cannot lead a deliberate life without the media because it is widely known that the current age is the age of communication.
Speaking at a ceremony to commemorate Journalist Day (Aug 7), he hailed martyred correspondents and congratulated those involved in journalism today.
"Given the heavy responsibility they shoulder, mediapersons, especially reporters, should encounter adversities with broad minds," he said.
Larijani further said that diversity and involvement in different crises are among the features of journalism.
Describing some complaints against the media as natural, he said that what is important is that the journalists should move within the framework of their main mission.
"Since the media have become an integral part of human life, that's why we are in need of competent, dynamic and well-known reporters," he said.
"We should be well aware of modern requirements in the field and that's for the same reason that holding scientific educational course is essential," the Majlis speaker noted.
Stating that promoting awareness in the society is depends on high knowledge of mediapersons and reporters, he also said that officials should give value to them and accept criticisms.
Every year the August 8 ( Mordad 17 AHS) is honored as Journalist Day in Iran.
Journalist Day has annually been observed to coincide with the martyrdom anniversary of an IRNA correspondent Mahmoud Saremi who was killed in line of duty in Afghanistan in 1998.
Saremi, disappeared, along with a group of Iranian diplomats, on August 8, when Taliban fighters seized the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif and captured the Iranian consulate. On August 10, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) urged Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar to investigate Saremi's disappearance. On September 10, a Taliban spokesman admitted that Saremi and eight other Iranians had been found murdered near Mazar-i-Sharif. After learning of the assassination, CPJ called on Mullah Mohammad Omar to launch an investigation into the killing.
We hope Muslim journalists would serve as examples of Muslims who remember God and uphold the rich Islamic culture and teachings in the fulfillment of their duties.
