Quranic illiteracy ought to be eliminated
Tehran, 2007 Oct 27, IQNA
Efforts ought to be made to eliminate Quranic illiteracy in the country, said head of the Majlis' Quran and Fostering Committee.
Speaking at the conference of Quranic centers Association on Thursday, Dr Laleh Eftekhari added “Unfortunately, the Education Ministry's Quran instruction programs have been insufficient and unsuccessful.
"Our goals in Quranic education should not be limited to Quran reading. Our students need to learn to see the world based on the teachings of the holy Quran.”
Ms Eftekhari thanked God for such blessings as the freedom in the country in terms of religious and Quranic activities and said “We live in an Islamic country where people warmly receive Quranic and spiritual activities. In the holy month of Ramadhan, in particular, we witnessed massive participation of the people in religious and Quranic programs like the International Quran Exhibition. Their huge turnout in the Eid prayers this year was also impressive.”
She noted that such enthusiasm for Quranic and religious programs highlights the responsibility of the officials, especially members of the Majlis, government officials, and members of the Supreme Cultural Revolution Council, in this regard.
“It is unbecoming of an Islamic government like ours to have managers, officials and personnel who are unaware of the teachings of the holy Quran or even unable to read the verses of the holy book accurately. Our officials should not only read the Quran and contemplate on its concepts, but also act upon its lofty teachings,” she observed.
She also called for more participation of grassroots Quranic organizations in helping promote the Quranic culture in society.
Elsewhere in her remarks, Ms Eftekhari referred to creation of the Quran and Fostering Committee of Majlis as a successful move and said such fractions are going to be founded in the parliaments of some other Islamic countries, as well. The formation of the Quran and Fostering Committee in the Majlis as a sign of the Iranian nation's determination to advance and foster Quranic activities.
The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, as the body that decides how cultural budgets should be spent, is responsible to direct the funds to structural planning in Quranic fields.
