Tehran, 2007 Sep 4, IRNA
Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani said on Tuesday that the West will definitely pay attention to decisions of the Assembly of Experts at a time when the US is lobbying against Iranian nuclear program.
Larijani said in his address to the second meeting in the current year of the Fourth Assembly of Experts, that the assembly is the highest democratic body of the Islamic system, and that its decisions are of prime importance.
He presented a report to the 86-seat Constitutional body on the process of Iran's nuclear dossier and said that the EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana, had put forward an initiative in the last round of talks to set a timetable with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to address the outstanding concerns.
"Iran has made a breakthrough in resolving the dispute with IAEA with setting up a modality plan in two months, he said, adding that given round-the-clock efforts in this respect, Iran and IAEA have set up the plan sooner than expected.
"It is another test for the group of 5+1 and IAEA to take the chance the Iranian positive step has created," he noted.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he referred to the US president's new term of 'nuclear holocaust', and said that such rhetoric concerns certain countries including the US which possess atomic bombs, but according to the American think-tank, Iran is far from such weapons.
However, Iran has showed its goodwill in resolving the nuclear dispute, he said, noting that the US officials are doing as if they developed deaf.
Larijani further said, "Iran is a noble power in the region, which is after sustainable peace and stability."
Criticizing the US attempts to form artificial alliance against Iran in the region, he said that it is a failed tactic on part of the US.
Larijani noted that the Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Mousa ruled out the US call for anti-Iran alliance and instead have emphasized the need for holding talks with Iran.
The American officials claim that Iran seeks hegemony in the region, they do not have accurate understanding of modern Islamic thought, and regional nations are vigilant and will not accept any kind of hegemony.
Deriding the US statement on arresting 50 members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) in Iraq, he said, "If you are right, announce five names from the 50."
Larijani also added that Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri's initiative on Lebanon is a basic plan for resolving crisis with an aim of creating political understanding. The US must give up adventurism in Lebanon, he said.
On Palestine, he noted that ignoring Hamas political status as a popular influential party in an artificial conference will lead to breakdown.
