Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called on the D8 (the eight developing Islamic countries) to promote the group to an international body.
"The members of the D8 should strive to promote the organization to the level of the international bodies," Ahmadinejad said in a meeting with former Secretary General of D8 Dipo Alam.
Appreciating the "useful and constructive" measures adopted to strengthen the D8 during Alam's term, he expressed the hope that the trend of progress and promotion of D8 would further continue.
Ahmadinejad also underlined Iran's resolve to help to the reinvigoration of the D8 Group.
Alam, for his part, viewed Iran's role in the D8 as highly important and effective, and said, "Iran is one of the important countries of the D8 Group and we hope to observe D8's progress on regional and international scenes with an increase in cooperation among the member states."
Alam, who is a cabinet minister of the Indonesian government, also submitted a message from his country's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to Ahmadinejad, urging for the promotion of bilateral relations in different fields, specially in economy and joint investment.
"Indonesia seeks to further increase its cooperation and relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran and is willing to buy Iranian products more than before," he added.
