Mottaki: Iran`s scientific breakthrough to restore peace to region
Tehran, 2008 Feb 5
Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Tuesday that success of Iranian scientists and researchers in various scientific fields have led to upgrading of the country`s diplomacy worldwide.
Speaking to IRNA, he said the activities of Iranian scientists and researchers indicated that they have taken concrete steps towards attaining self-sufficiency and independence in various sectors.
Iran's scientific breakthroughs in defense and scientific fields help restore peace and security to the region, he said adding that any country which remains dependent on others will lose the chance of attaining independence.
Referring to successful launch of first ever Iranian Explorer-1 space research unit into the space, he said "If the country manages to display its new scientific capabilities, it will leave positive impacts on its relations with the international community.
"This will persuade others to adopt a different attitude towards the Asian countries and consider them similar to the advanced countries which enjoy such technological superiority," he said.
On current ties between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Persian Gulf littoral states, he said the ties between Iran and those countries are now developing.
During his recent visit to Doha, President Ahmadinejad proposed to the heads of Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) to form a new grouping dubbed as 6+1, he said.
Ahmadinejad`s proposal is to be studied in the upcoming PGCC foreign ministers meeting, he said.
On expansion of economic cooperation, he said Iran and the PGCC held fruitful talks on setting up joint free trade zones by Persian Gulf littoral states which sounds very promising.
