Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Mehdi Mostafavi said on Monday that the landmark Conference on 'Human Rights and Cultural Diversity' accounts for a success for the international community in advancing the goal of human rights from perspective of cultural diversity vis-a-vis uniculturalism advocated by the Western states.
He told reporters on the sidelines of the conference that presence of 56 ministers and over 100 delegations from 118 NAM member states and 15 observer nations in the conference indicated international resolve to uphold human rights in line with the cultural diversity in the international community.
He said that major international organizations including the United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) and the United Nations Commission on Human Rights have also taken part in the conference at the highest level.
UN High Commissioner on Human Rights Louise Arbour delivered a keynote speech at the conference.
Mostafavi said that representatives of the international community have gathered in Tehran to express indignation at abuse of the principle of human rights by certain states.
He said that the international community has reached a point that it should work together on an action plan to uphold human rights in conformity with cultural diversity and thwart uniculturalism.
Mostafavi said that unanimity of view of the international community on the principle of human rights will serve the
international peace and friendship.
