 Dialect atlas of Iran in 2 years

The mega project for compiling Iran's dialect atlas which has been started since six years ago is due to be completed by 2009.
"After six years of continuous work in an attempt to record various dialects in all Iranian provinces, the first phase for preparing Iran's dialect atlas has reached to an end and we have started the supplemental phase including categorizing and documenting the gathered information. Based on the scheduled programs, the project is supposed to be completed within two years," said Dr. Yadolah Parmoun, head of dialect research center of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Organization (ICHHT) to CHN.
According to Parmoun, training classes will be arranged during this phase in which the methods for completing the data base and compiling them will be taught to dialect experts in different Iranian provinces.
Head of dialect research center of ICHHT further added that a guide book would be released in a near future in which the approaches for how to compile the atlas as well as how to record the tones will be explained in detail.
More than 10,000 dialects and accents have been identified so far all over the country. During the next phase, experts will digitalize the records.
The Islamic Republic of Iran is a highly diverse country from every point of view, not only in topography and climate but also in its inhabitants, arts and customs.
Consisted of different ethnic groups in different places, there is a number of other dialects and national languages which are used in everyday life by different tribes including Azari, Kurdish, Luri, Guilaki, Baluchi, Arabic, etc. Although, Persian is the formal written and spoken language which is understood by the whole nation.
