Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad and his Iraqi counterpart Jalal Talabani issued a joint press statement on Wednesday November 29 condemning the terrorist attacks in Iraq and emphasized the need for combating such vicious acts in the war-torn country.
Tehran and Baghdad called for promotion of political, cultural, industrial, economic, oil, and security cooperation based on neighborly co-existence and no interference in each other's internal affairs.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the political process and the establishment of democratic bodies in Iraq and calls on the Iraqi nation to maintain their national unity, territorial integrity, and independence...,” the statement read.
Iran also welcomes Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's national reconciliation plan and the elected Iraqi government's determination to establish security and stability and fully supports the continuation of such process to set up a national sovereignty and sustainable security and stability, it added.
Tehran also expressed satisfaction over a recent ratification by Baghdad to expel the elements of the outlawed terrorist munafiqeen organisation "Mojahideen Khalq Organization" (MKO) from Iraq, calling it a positive step toward deepening bilateral ties.
Both sides stressed that the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein must be fairly put on trial over his crimes against the Iraqi nation and his invasion of Iran and Kuwait.
Talabani wrapped up a three-day visit to Iran on Wednesday.
