Nine people were injured in Indian Kashmir when police broke-up a rally by several thousand Muslims protesting US President George W Bush's visit to India, police and witnesses said Thursday.
Police used batons and fired scores of tear gas shells to disperse around 4,000 protesters on the outskirts of the summer capital Srinagar.
"Nine people were injured in the police action," a police officer said, adding that the protesters were trying to reach a small UN office in Srinagar to present a memorandum denouncing Bush's visit to India.
The protesters, who were chanting "Allah-o-Akbar" and "Down with American Imperialism", hurled stones and bricks at police and security vehicles.
"The protest was to show anger at Bush's visit to India," Abdulqayoom, one of the protesters said.
In New Delhi, members of parliament from the left and Samajwadi Parties (SP) Thursday also staged a demonstration at its main gate protesting against the visit of US President George W. Bush.
Holding placards with writings such as 'war criminal Bush go back', `killer Bush', the members denounced Bush in their slogans.
Mohammad Salim, Communist Party of India Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, said his party opposed Manmohan Singh's welcome for President Bush at the airport.
Mohammad Salim said most of the 110 crore people of the country were opposed to US imperialism.
Splitting the letters in Bush, one of the placards read B-barbarian, U-uncivilixed, S-sadist and H-horrendous.
