Tehran, 2006/12/15, IRNA
Substitute Friday prayers leader of Tehran Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami said on Friday that massive turnout of people in the 4th Assembly of Experts and 3rd local councils elections as well as the second by-elections of the 7th Majlis is a sign of high wisdom of Iranians who have attained significant political maturity.
Iranians are quite aware of the fact that their presence will play a significant role in disappointing their enemies, he said.
The active presence of Iranians in these elections once again foiled plots hatched by the enemies, he underlined.
Peoples' turnout is the clearest manifestation of democracy in the Islamic Republic of Iran, he underlined.
On regional and international developments, he referred to recent confession of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on the country's access to nuclear weapons and said, "the Zionist regime armed with nuclear arsenal should be regarded as a serious threat to global security."
A savage, crazy, illogical, usurper and dangerous regime such as Israel has now possessed such fatal weapons, he underlined.
"The United Nations along with IAEA International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have declared that the Zionist regime has about 400 nuclear warheads and the regime with reliance on US supports has refused to sign any international supervisory accords."
UN charter calls its member and non-member states to avoid any move which might endanger global peace and security, he underlined.
Ayatollah Khatami called the international community to strongly condemn the Zionist regime and take proper action in dealing with it.
A number of countries and international organizations have adopted a double-standard policy in dealing with international norms, he said expressing regret over their silence and strongly criticizing them for their negligence over issuing a statement against atrocities and violence of a savage regime fully armed with nuclear weapons.
The Islamic Republic of Iran is among founders of IAEA and UN observatory body and plays active role among its members, he said.
The country pursues a peaceful nuclear program and the IAEA is a good witness to this claim, he said.
"Our nuclear sites are always open to international inspectors and next week another group of inspectors are to visit our sites," Tehran's substitute Friday prayers leader pointed out.
