Iran’s president Mohammad Khatami on Monday 9 August extended felicitations on the 70th anniversary of the establishment of IRNA and thanked the staffers for their hard work.
The president defended freedom of expression and said that sometimes certain groups enforce special methodology in the field of news broadcast limiting the scope of knowledge of the public and social freedom which is dangerous.
"It is impossible to keep the society unaware of the developments in an era when mass media and information technology have made dramatic progress," the president said.
"I believe IRNA should work hard to lead the community to wisdom in which all political parties take decision in light of wisdom. It is a difficult task, because those enjoying political and economic privileges prefer to incite public sentiments rather than wisdom,” President Khatami said.
IRNA should also promote healthy criticism in the matters concerning administrative affairs of the country. He drew attention of IRNA staffers to the misuse of mass media by the big powers and said that those possessing advanced technology and are on top of global media system are misleading public opinion according to their own interest.
The president complained that media have not explained extensive achievements of his government especially in the economic sector.
"My government has made eye-catching headway in the economic sector including application of unified foreign exchange rates, boosting value of national currency and setting up the unprecedented special fund for foreign currency reserve and encouraging the private sector with steps taken in this respect," the president said.
"Sometimes, media displays strong points of a government as a weak point," President Khatami said.
