The victory of the main Iraqi Shi'ite Alliance in the landmark election in Iraq with close to 51 percent of the vote or about 142 seats in the 275-seat assembly indicates the degree of influence and power of the religious authorities in the country.
Indeed, religious authorities in Iraq stressing the necessity of holding the election without any delay and supporting the Shi’ite list, showed it was a great source of power in Iraq which can play a determining role in today and future development in the country.
Political experts say grabbing lion share of the vote in Iraqi election by the Shi'ites of the country is proportionate to the amount of Shi’ite population in Iraq and they predict the result would also reflect in the future political structure of the country.
However, necessity of preserving the unity and integrity in the country requires the different political and ethnic groups to cooperate in Iraq's political structure as well. Therefore, efforts by the Shi’ite leaders to invite other groups, Sunnis leaders in particular, to cooperate in compiling a constitution display their political rationale.
In a word, Iraqi people's massive participation in the election showed their will to enjoy an independent and united Iraq. It is now up to the leaders of the country to achieve the desire.
